Life sciences

Norfolk & Suffolk’s life sciences sector is home to innovative, high-tech businesses and research institutions with close links to the food, health, ICT and agriculture sectors. The billion-pound sector has a highly skilled workforce of some 10,000 across the region, and is growing faster than regional peers (even the nearby Cambridge cluster). One example of leading-edge science is the new £76m Quadram Institute at Norwich Research Park, which investigates how food and microbes interact to promote health and prevent disease.

Advanced manufacturing

The advanced manufacturing and engineering sector in Norfolk & Suffolk covers aerospace, automotive, life sciences, agriculture, and food production, as well as energy. With a workforce of 84,500 and economic value of £5.1 billion, it is amongst the largest of Norfolk & Suffolk’s industries. Hethel Engineering Centre, alongside the Lotus car plant in Norfolk, is a regional hub for innovation and technology in this sector.

Visitor economy

Norfolk & Suffolk attracts five million overnight visitors a year, with traditional holiday coastal destinations and unique natural assets. The sector employs 88,000 people and attracts significant investment from national and international bodies. It also has the global home of horseracing at Newmarket and important heritage sites such as the Sutton Hoo museum in East Suffolk and Norwich, England’s most complete medieval city. Our vibrant cultural sector boasts award winning theatres, and major international festivals at Aldeburgh, Norwich and ‘Latitude’ near Southwold.

Strategically located near to London, Norfolk & Suffolk boasts one of the largest financial services clusters in Europe. Norwich is one of the largest general insurance markets in Europe. Recognised as a centre for excellence for financial and professional services, it has a significant cluster of global firms including Aviva, Marsh and Moneyfacts, supported by the first National Skills Academy in the UK for financial services. Ipswich’s global insurance firms include Willis Towers Watson, AXA and Direct Line, with specialist providers covering marine and agriculture risks, and wider financial product areas.

The region has a large and diverse construction and development sector, employing approximately 70,000 people and involving over 10,000 businesses. Working closely with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), it is supported by a strong skill base. With significant numbers of homes needed to support the growth in our economy, new technologies and practices are being developed at facilities like the Fabric First Institute at Easton & Otley College. These include 3D printing, robotics, modular construction and other modern methods of construction and sustainable design.
